LED Traffic Light Signal Conversion Project Funds Allocated - Thursday, August 13, 2009
The ERC distributed $125,000 to 38 municipalities as reimbursement for 62% of the cost of their LED traffic signal equipment associated with the LED Traffic Signal Conversion Project. These municipalities in 8 counties participated in an LED traffic signal technology bulk purchase consortium organized by the ERC in partnership with PennDOT Districts 2-0 and 3-0. Because of the large volume of equipment purchased, the ERC was able to negotiate a 25% reduction over the posted COSTARS pricing of the LED equipment. The ERC procured grants from the federal Appalachian Regional Commission and the Department of Community & Economic Development’s Governor’s Center for Local Government Services to further allay the cost of the LED equipment to participating municipalities.

LED traffic lights use about 85% less energy than incandescent lights, resulting in an annual cost decrease of approximately $800 per intersection. As a result of the LED Traffic Signal Conversion Project, virtually all of the signalized intersections in SEDA-COG’s 11-county region now operate using energy-sipping LED technology.
