The US Department of Energy's Energy Star Program provides guidelines and step-by-step instructions on ways to become more energy efficient.
A resource for information on sustainability programs for local goverments, and on membership with the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives, an organization of over 500 US Local Governments committed to climate protection and sustainability.
Green Communities
This site provides information about Green Communities, a program that provides funding and information to help housing developers build and rehabilitate houses to become better for the environment without high costs. Green Communities also assists state and local governments adopt housing and economic development policies that are smart and sustainable.
Information to help communities design and implement innovative strategies that enhance the local economy as well as the local environment and quality of life. Initiatives and financial opportunities, including grants and other funding, are described here.
Post Carbon Institute
The Post Carbon Institute conducts research, develops techinical tools, and organizes leaders to help communities understand and respond to fossil fuel depletion and climate change. This site contains links to events, articles, and commentary about a broad range of community organizational actions. It also links to the Post Carbon Communities site, which provides Energy Independence Strategies developed by participating communities.
The US Conference of Mayors represents cities with 30,000 people or more. This site contains links to both policy and research-related publications compiled by the Conference on topics including energy, the environment, workforce training, and more.
The National Renewable Energy Lab compiled this report of existing wind ordinances nationwide to educate and engage state and local governments, as well as policymakers, about existing large wind energy ordinances. It provides a collection of examples for municipalities in drafting new large wind energy ordinances in towns or counties without existing ordinances.
